What? The Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship Training Program is four modules of the Skilled Trades Foundation Program, The ITA HEO program and 6 weeks (120 hours) of hands on training on equipment. This program is a total of 12 weeks. 

Who? As an Indigenous centre for excellence, NVIT inspires learners to strengthen community. One of NVIT's key strategies is to maintain and enhance strategies to respond to community needs for programs and services. NVIT is a leader in Indigenous education and we are excited to bring our courses to Nooaitch!

This program starts on May 1, 2023 and goes to July 21, 2023. (to be confirmed)

Course Delivery:
  • Upon completion, participants will be prepared to write the HEO Operator exam with Skilled Trades BC. 
  • Participants will be put in the operator seat of a machine as they learn the basics of work-based training on four different machines including pre- and post- operation maintenance checks - Excavator, Loader, Rock Truck, and Dozer.
  • Blend of classroom and hands-on machine learning. Participants will spend time in classroom to go over machine theory, prep exam, resume building sessions and complete career exploration assignments. 
  • Participants are assigned individual machines to maximize their ability to learn, train and complete real-world tasks.
  • The training is 12 weeks in length: 2 week foundation component; 3 week heavy equipment operator component and 6 week practical component. 
  • Online courses provided: WHIMIS and Ground Disturbance.

Students must be 19 years of age or have parental consent as well as grade 10 level reading and math skills. Students will need:

  • Safety Boots
  • Safety Vest
  • Hard Hat
  • Must dress for weather conditions

Applicants must participate in two day Community Based Assessment (CBA) program at Nooaitch with NVIT's Associate Registrar. Date to be announced.

Upon Completion, successful students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Safely operate the equipment
  • Have a working knowledge of ditching, road building, site preparation, sloping, building site preparation, site level reading, laser training.
